Three Tucson-area high schools are the first in the nation to test a text-message system that alerts parents when their children skip class.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Bill and Melinda Gates are working through their foundation to overcome what they believe are urgent problems faced by American schools. The foundation commissioned a study, The Silent Epidemic, that identified lack of communication between parents and high schools as a factor causing students to drop out.

Time magazine-Oprah Winfrey Show Poll

A poll conducted by Time magazine and The Oprah Winfrey Show found that 89% of respondents considered the school dropout rate to be somewhat or very serious, and 83% felt that stronger methods to cut down on truancy would be somewhat or very effective in increasing graduation rates.
